I thought I would share a story about my dad since Father’s Day is coming.
July of 2007, nearly 2 years ago we got a call that my Dad had fallen at work and they are taking him to the hospital. He hit his head pretty good and they had done a CAT scan. What we didn’t expect was for them to tell us that he had other health problems. That August he had surgery for a shunt. Not to long after that my mom had dropped him at home after a Dr’s appointment and went to run some errands. My poor mom came home and found my dad on the floor. Back to the ER we went only to be sent home and said everything is fine. Two days later my dad was having brain surgery for fluid that built up on the outside of his brain. My dad could no longer walk, sit up on his own or eat anything that wasn’t mushed up. Three months after that surgery he was able to come back home but weighed less than 110 lb’s and still couldn’t sit up in his chair on his own. It was very sad to see my dad like this.
Now for the good news….
Although my dad is still in a wheelchair, and my sister and I miss the days that he used to chase my older brother around the house, he is so much better. We found a great program that he attends 3 days a week. He gets to socialize with other people than his nutty family. They take trips to the casino, dollar store, or just stay at the center and play cards. He’s gained nearly 70lb (that’s a lot for my dad). Can walk a little with assistance and eats everything in sight. He looks great.
One of my dad’s part time jobs was a night security guard at the library my husband and I work at and yesterday through the center he attends he was able to visit us. He was a celebrity and it was so nice to see my dad smiling and talking about old times with all the staff.
So Dad….
I LOVE YOU and HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
